Phuket is an island located along the Andaman Sea. Phuket is also the largest island in Thailand. Phuket is a huge resort haven that caters to locals and the elite. Phuket is known for its mountainous, rainforest, beach terrain. Phuket has many sections. In Phuket City you will find the #1 touristy area named Patong Beach. Patong Beach is surrounded by spas, nightlife and eateries. This is where you will find throngs of people either clambering for a spot on busy Katong Beach or many trying to avoid the heat and humidity by visiting 1 of many restaurants or shops. Phuket is known to host Eastern Europeans and the Chinese as the highest demographic served to date. In the 80’s it was a haven and backdrop for Americans & Europeans.
Unlike Bangkok, Phuket has a laid back beach vibe. No one is in a rush in Phuket. Everyone knows the moped is the best mode of transport for most people. There are moped rental options all throughout Phuket. Patong Beach is the largest beach but not the only beach in Phuket. Patong as an area is a mixed bag of hotels/resorts, local business, residential, and beach. Knowing this you know how busy it can feel. It’s very hard to be a pedestrian in Thailand in general and this island has small streets with virtually no sidewalks and traffic lights are a nightmare. Getting across streets in Phuket is a skill. Pedestrians beware.
